　　SeattleissituatedinthewestofWashington,thenorthwesternmoststate.Thelargestcityinthestate,SeattlesitsonaskinnyslipoflandbetweenthePugetSound（普吉特海湾）andLakeWashington.LakeUnionandtheLakeWashingtonShipCanaldividethecityintonorthernandsouthernhalves;downtownandtheCapitolHillandQueenAnneneighborhoodsliesouthofthecanal,theUDistrictistothenortheast.

　　BeforethearrivalofEuropeans,theSeattleareawashometotheDuwamish,agenerallypeaceabletribethatfishedthebaysandriversofthePugetSoundandbefriended（帮助）earlywhitesettlers.In1851,anativeNewYorkernamedDavidDennyledthefirstgroupofsettlersacrosstheOregonTrailwiththeintentionofsettlingalongthePugetSound.Recognizingthearea’sseaportpossibilities,Denny’sbandstakedaclaimonAlkiPointinpresent-dayWestSeattle.Afterawinterofwindandrain,thegroupmovedthesettlementtoElliottBay（依利雅特湾）,renamingitSeattlefortheDuwamishchiefSealth,afriendofanearlymerchant.
　　Hardlyaboomtown（新兴城市）,earlySeattlewaspeopledmainlybybachelorsuntiloneofthefoundingfatherswentbackeastonamissiontoinduceyoungunmarriedwomentocometoSeattle.Ontwodifferenttrips,atotalof57womenmadethejourneyandmarriedintothefrontierstock,intheprocesssettingamorecivilizedtoneforthecity.Aspur（铁路的支线）fromtheNorthernPacificRailroad’sterminusinPortlandreachedSeattlein1893,linkingthetownbyrailwiththerestofthecountry.Thelumber,shippingandgeneralcommercederivedfromimmigrationsoonswelledthetown’srankssomuchthateventheGreatFireof1889barelyslowedtheadvance.After50blocksoftheoldwoodendowntownburnedinasingleday,thecitywasreborninbrickandiron,centeredontoday’sPioneerSquare.
　　Seattle’sfirstboomcamewhentheshipPortlanddockedin1897withitsnow-famouscargo:twotonsofYukongold.Withinweeks,thousandsoffortunehuntersfromacrossthecountrypassedthroughontheirwaytothenortherngoldfields.LocalbusinessblossomedasSeattlebecamethebankingcenterforthenouveauriche（爆发户）,andthebars,brothels（妓院）andhonky-tonks（下等酒馆）ofPioneerSquareoverflowedwithpleasure-starvedminers.
　　TheboomcontinuedthroughWWI,whenNorthwestlumberwasgreatlyindemandandshipyardsalongthePugetSound’harvested’thesurroundingforests.WWIIfurtheredtheshipbuildingboom,andaircraftandatomicenergyindustriesaddedtotheregion’spatternofprofit.Today,internationaltradeandtechfirms(suchasMicrosoftandAmazon)makeupthebackbone（支柱）ofSeattle’sboomingeconomy.AndalthoughBoeing,fordecadesassynonymouswithSeattleasrain,announcedin2001thatitwasupandleavingforwindierpasturesinChicago,thecity’sprogressivepolitics,inventivecultureandreadyaccesstooutdoorrecreationcontinuetolurerestlesspeoplelikenoplaceelseontheWestCoast.
